Ok, I’ll come cleangenerally I don’t like Italian humor! I don’t find it funny at all, it doesn’t make me laugh, I just don’t get it, so it seems. So normally I don’t like Italian comedies either. Strangely enough there are a few comedy films I totally love!
I can watch those films over and over again. And I’m dying to tell you all about them tonight. Well, at least two of them: Benvenuti Al Sud (Welcome to the South) and the sequel Benvenuti Al Nord (Welcome to the North). These two comedy films are absolutely hilarious!
Both films are about the differences between the North of Italy and the South. In the first film “Benvenuti Al Sud”, which is practically an Italian remake of the French comedy film Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis, the manager of the postal service near Milan is banished to the South of Italy, close to Naples.
In the sequel it’s the other way around. Without getting banal the prejudices that people from the North have towards the people from the South (and vice versa) are shown in a very comic way. Now in the Far North (i.e. Milan!), Alberto has accepted to manage a program for efficiency improvement in the Italian Post. He devotes all his time and all his energy to this noble (?) task and neglects his wife Silvia, which of course annoys her beyond limits. Things do not fare much better in Castellabate where it is rather Maria, Matta's wife, who gets on his nerves by always blaming him for his lack of ambition. One day, due to a misunderstanding, Mattia is transferred to. And on whose doorstep does he land?

Alberto's of course! Only a few sequels can stick the great success of the first movie nowadays. Benvenuti al Nord is not so bad but there is nothing new here. I saw many jokes and typical situations of the Italian north in Milan. Some original scenes rounded this second part up. I think in the last one there were also some ridiculous scenes but these didn't slow down the dynamic.
As an Italian I understood the funny dialogs in dialect so that I spent a real entertaining time. It's much more enjoyable if you see it in the origin language version with subtitles. But I cannot imagine that there would be ever a third part. I suppose the ideas are sold out for the next one. Thumbs up for Alessandro Siani and Claudio Bisio that delivered for a second time a very convincing and respectable performance.
